If the equalizers on either the old (dead CD) unit or the "new" (scratchy CD) unit are working OK with your radio, i.e. when no CD is playing, I have to think that the wiring is OK - it seems to me that the entire secondary unit operates like a tape loop off of the main radio unit.
I gave up trying to find a good used CD/Equalizer and found a SAAB/Clarion Equalizer (with CD changer controller) brand new on eBay for $30. It looks just like the CD/Equalizer and fits into its cage, obviously has no CD, but does have controls for my trunk-mounted Clarion CD changer.
