Running rich/excess fuel consumption

Car is a '93 2.0 litre CD with auto box.Very recently I noticed an increase in recorded fuel consumption every time I accelerated even the slightest degree. There's also a slight hesitation when the engine drops back to idle speed. The exhaust ppe is newly lined with fine soot. The engine seems to be fine, it pulls well without hesitation and once back at idle, it doesn't miss or stagger. My fuel consumption has gone from 32mpg to 28mpg and seems to be still dropping.
Anyone got any ideas as to what the cause might be?
I'll be grateful for any leads I can follow up.
Regards,
Steve
