No axle needs to be removed or at least it doesn't on the 91 9kt. I jacked up the engine via the tranny until the driveshafts touched the bottom of the struts. Motor mounts are disconnected of course and the tranny mount was not. To get to those hard to reach bolts thru the drive axle this is what I did. Place your socket on top of the space between the inner shaft and engine then run a long socket extension up thtough the limited space. Connect the extension with socket and loosen away. Remember how you dropped the pan because of the limited space and fitting the pan back up will be difficult otherwise. It was for me at least.
