Started out rocky after breaking my ratchet on the axle nut, I had to go to Sears and buy a flex handle to get it off (I don't know what I was thinking, ratchets can only take about 100 ft./lbs.). Everything went according to plan however, used the Haynes. It was much easier than I thought, and took less time too. I did clean out the inner cup and also the inner boot with degreaser, it got a lot of dirt in it from the removal process. I packed them with paper towels to get almost all the solvent out so it wouldn't thin the new grease. I used CV joint grease in there, the Haynes calls for 2 different greases for inners and outers, but judging from what came out of there (looked like used engine oil) I figure CV grease has to be better than that. Amazing how easy the outer joint came off the axle. Did most of the work in about 2 hours. Then came the inner joint clamp. What a bitch that was. No room for my crimper, managed to get it on snug, but will need to get something better on there. I must have spent about 1.5 hours on that stupid thing. How did you do your clamp? While doing the joint without removing the axle is probably possible, getting the axle out of the CV joint would probably be must more difficult. Just one more thing I can do now, not that I want to...it is a pretty messy job. Went through a bunch of paper towels, rags, and gloves.
