There is a damper in the fuel system that is supposed to minimize the sound, or pulses, created by the fuel pump; however, on some models the sound is still quite audible. They have a consistent, low drumming that can be heard at idle and low speeds and almost sounds like an engine component, but is not metallic in any way. I can hear mine in my 1991 very clearly in the cabin, but not under the hood. I hope that this helps.
