like the alternator. Mine sounded the same when the bearings failed...even though the charge light never came on. The only other time my car did this was when the tensioner failed. THis could explain your belt slipping noise, because that shouldn't happen under normal circumstances. When your AC comes on, your idle will wander a bit until it adjusts for load, but it shouldn't produce any belt squeal.

FYI, It took me two belts to realize the tensioner had failed. My first belt shredded, the second one came apart quickly. When the tensioner failed the pulley was cocked out of the plane of the other accessory pulleys. The little ridges in the pulley cut the belt up in short order.
I would think you could hear the exhaust leak outside better than inside.
