but... it is different. The flywheel in a manual bolts to the crank and is the component that, along with the pressure plate, clamps on the clutch disk (somewhat like a disk brake rotor ) which is mounted on the input splines of the manual tranmission. This flywheel is an integral portion of the transfer of the power from the engine to transmission. Oh, it also has a gear cut on the outer edge to allow the starter to turn the engine over.
The flexplate connects from the output of the engine to the input of the transmission. Does not have a driving surface as on the pressure plate. It uses a splined shaft similar to the one in a manual, but instead of plugging into a clutch disk it plugs into the torque converter. No driven surface, but it bolts to the crankshaft the same as the flywheel. The unit is lighter and is already cross drilled. The ability to disconnect the output of the engine to the input of the transmission is done in the torque converter (not a flywheel/clutch disk/pressure plate sandwich as in the manual). So how do you get the start to do it's thing? The gears are cut on the edge of the flexplate, and this entire thing lines up exactly the same as the manual for a same setup for the starter. This is one of the reasons it's pretty straightforward to convert from Auto to Manual (and I guess you go the other way, but *why*?).
so N E way-
