Joe,
On the 91 9kt I pulled the head with the intake and exhaust manifold still on it. Very heavy but much easier to work on if you break a stud or cleaning up the the gasket surface. You will need 2 people for sure to pull the head and 3 people when you put it back on. The other person is for the timing chain. There are timing marks on cams/cam gears and the Townsend writeup tells you to turn the engine until it reads 0 on the flywheel for TDC. I cleaned the tops of my pistons carefully while having a shop vac running to suck up grit. I did not have my head machined but I did not have an overheat, just oil in the coolant. Used brake cleaner to clean the block and head surface. Even used JB weld to fill in a couple of pitted spots on the block :-) The car had 158K on it when the HG went. At 208K doesn't use coolant and runs great. I'm in need of a new AT though so it sits :-(
