Heater Core Problem Cause

I know these are a typical issue for 9000s, but what typically is the cause? Unusual stress/jolting? I ask because I am wondering if it is possible/likely that the shop's damage caused it to start leaking. The shop drove the car with one of the wheels unattached and the Saab fell, damaging the fender. They have since repaired the damage, but the heater core problem appeared at pick-up.
