29 months ago I paid $10K for my '96 CSE 5-spd with 90K on it, extremely well-maintained, in near pristine condition, with perfect Aero wheels and new Toyo Proxes, a 24-month warranty, spare alloys with new snows, and a new factory trailer hitch. Car needed nothing to speak of, the warranty more than paid for itself and the car still looks and drives like it has <60K instead of nearly twice that. I routinely take it on 500-1,000 mile trips and it never lets me down.
Then again, a year ago I paid $2K for my '95 CS auto with 138K that had been maintained OK, was in decent shape, but was at a major wear cycle and has needed over a grand worth of stuff, plus tires, all of which I knew going in. Still, it runs great and is very reliable. Just niggling details that annoy. But it is NOT as nice as my '96.
Did I pay too much for the '96 and did I do better on the '95? Beats me, but the prices of 9000s can be strange. They are hugely undervalued, but the right car (for a given buyer) can be worth more than conventional wisdom would expect. I considered at least half a dozen other 9Ks for much less money when I bought my '96, but I wouldn't have had a car that looks or drives as well, came with the extras, or that had been so well maintained. I paid more to get more, as I intend to keep it a long time.
As the old saying goes, you pays your money and you takes your choice.
