If the controller and/or its connector are dead the blower won't run. Fix the easiest thing first. The controller is very easy to do--10-15 minutes max. I put in a used one and it has been fine for 6 months.
If you test the blower with the controller out of the loop and it doesn't work, then it's a bigger job, but start small. IMHO, it makes some sense to do the heater core if you have the blower out anyway, but you don't have to remove the blower to do the fan controller.
