a few years ago after having many parts (mostly starters, (vw) generators and alternators) from a particular rebuilder failing in service, we (the twisted individuals at the shop i worked at) edited the copy on this companies standard box. It described all the work they did to ensure the part was free of any possible difficulties and how nobody else could possibly do as good a job as they did each and every time.

they at least painted them. sometimes they would strip a VR screw or put a pulley on wrong, if they figured out how to get it apart. If you were lucky, it was only clocked wrong. i guess you could say that not all the crap was on the outside of the box.

average time they lasted was a month or so. not long after the box defacement, our favorite parts store found a new supplier.

what do i do now on my own cars? if the bearings are quiet, i replace the VR, in the car or on the bench whatever is easier. if the bearings and/or diodes are bad, i bring it to a local auto electric place and have them rebuild it.

on yours, unplug the green wire and turn the key to check the light in the dash. if the wire is not touching anything, it shouldn't be lit. ground it and the light should come on bright. if that wire doesn't work, or if the light bulb is blown (i know yours works) then it won't charge even with a good alternator.

i have not had used autozone except once late on a sunday when nothing else was open. i got an alternator and it lasted 3 months until i took the car off the road.
