I have a 93 9000 that I recently did a head gasket on and replaced an exhaust valve. After doing all that work, I drove it 550 miles from MA to VT and back, and it ran great. Then, as I was driving it to replace the rear brake pads after getting it inspected in MA (which it passed the emissons part flawlessly!), I started slowing down due to traffic on the highway, I noticed that the oil pressure light came on as the RPMs dropped below about 1800-2K.

I pulled over and shut off the engine. Started it up again, and sure enough, no oil pressure, engine was very loud. That was last monday. I thought it was the oil pressure release valve, which seemed like it was getting stuck(I got it towed and took out the Oil pressure relase valve), so I bought a new one (45 dollars!!) and replaced it today, hopeing it would fix the problem. Well, it didn't fix the problem and I still have no oil pressure at low RPMs.

What else could be the problem? I am out of ideas as to what it could be. When I start the car when cold, the oil light goes out, but as the temp of the oil increases, the oil light starts to come on(flickers), and then stays on steady. Could it be something in the timing cover that could cause this? Should I take off the valve cover or timing cover to see if there is anything getting clogged? What causes only low RPM, no oil pressure issues?

I am ready to just rip out the engine and swap in a different one. I found one with ~160K miles on it for a few hundred dollars near me, and I am considering going this route.

Thanks for the help and advice.
