Hello everyone. 94 9000CS 2.3L nonturbo auto 116,000mi
In the last 3 years, I've replaced H2O pump, Heater core, blower motor, and now the Thermoswitch on the passenger side of the radiator. Checked both low speed and high speed fan function and relays work fine.
Had my baby runnin' like a tiger..... 32 mpg on the interstate!
Then I got greedy. I'd all but given up on ever having the air conditioner going because it was melting the fuses in the fusebox! Not blowin' 'em.... MELTIN' THEM. Then I did some research on here and found all fans are OK, all fuses are OK, and the AC compresser clutch will engage..... only to get the 20A fuse electrodes so hot they'd start making the plastic bridge a gooey, lava hot mess. So I did some searching on here and saw a poor contact connection could be the culprit. So I took out the fuse box w/ torx screw, and pulled out the red and yellow wires that lead to the AC fan box, and have recapped the wires and re-installed a 20A fuse. Cool air. I was happy.
Well since, she overheats big time when I'm not driving on the interstate. Oh yeah, I replaced the thermostat too when I did the waterpump. Guess I shoulda just settled on a kick ass car w/ 115k miles getting 32mpg on the interstate!!! But ever since I've gotten the air going again, I'm real nervous about that temp lever creeping higher and higher to the red. I'm a compatent mechanic, but I'll be honest when I say I suck bad at being an electrician.
Before you say "search the boards," I've searched. Also, for the life of me, I can not find WHERE my outside temp gage plugs into the bottom of the fan base. I've tried just layin' the damn thing somewhere away from the engine and radiator but sure enough, when I'm sittin' in traffic the "outside temp" creeps up and up until it maxes out at about 115 degrees outside (when it's really 80). Then when I get on open road, the temp creeps back down to the correct tempurature.
Now I can live with this OTG but I did everything above to cure my overheating problem. Lower degree thermostat, and the regular tempswitch in the regulator had me believin' she'd be riding with the engine temp lever at 9.
But now I got greedy wanting the air conditioner to work. Found what was melting the fuses was a bad connection of wire to a fuse. Now it ain't melting anymore so I'm driving around thinking "alright. My Saaby's ready to roll for another 100,000 miles .... at 32 mpg ;). Not so. The temp nedle is going back up to about a 5 milimeters again from the red line. That terrible, evil, ill meaning red line. Any recommendations?? You folks are great. I've been on here reading and posting for believe it or not, 1997. I've always loved working on my saab myself because ya know why? It's fun. I like to do it, and I like to know what work is done on my baby is right.
I'm noticing it's the AC running that runs the temp up so high. Does this fire up anyone's "hey I know what that is" thinking?
Thanks y'all.
