I posted this past Saturday wife's 94 cst stranded on the NJ turnpike Friday evening. It had a torn belt. I repaired and went home. The car didn't make it home early Saturday morning. It came back on a flat bed truck. Saturday I removed the drain train to find a hole on the block. It had thrown a rod. What I didn't mention was there were engine noises prior to the belt being torn. It was muffled by loud music.
Having lined up a replacement engine, I need to get the bad one dissected to salvage usable parts to get the car back on the road. More importantly I want to know why it happened.
I put it on the stand yesterday. Opened the sump pan earlier. Based on what I saw, No. 1 piston didn't throw the rod Friday evening. The rod bearing cap may have severed completely from the rod Friday evening. But I think it was loose or was hanging on one bolt as early as July 7.
That was the day my son was stranded 30 miles from home on I-287. Although it seemed unrelated as the symptom was a drained battery. The way it loss power as described to me by my son I believed No. 1 piston rod bearing cap had already startied to separate ftom the crank shaft.
This car has been my wife's daily ride in a very gentle manner, 3 miles each way everyday. My thinking was the piston rod bearing cap was damaged quite early. Hard driving Friday evening by me on the turnpike made the clean break. Excessive engine vibration ensued. It caused the belt to go, stranded me on NJ turnpike. The violent engine vibrations I saw after started up the engine following belt repair was because the engine was running on three cylinders. Yet I did 25 miles at 70 mph with it, eventually created the hole on the block five miles from home on the turnpike.
I couldn't find my earlier post describing loud valve tapping noises I dismissed. It was cause by the loose bearing cap knocking the oil pick up tube askew, severely restricting oil pickup from the sump.
There was no indication of the trouble prior to being stranded on July 7.
