A CD will store MP3's, but you need a "special" CD player to convert MP3 format back to an analog signal.
An ipod stores MP3's as well and it also has the MP3-to-ananlog converter built-in.
So, if you have a stock stereo that's a casette player, an ipod with a cassette adapter is probably the easiest way to get MP3's in your car.
If you already have an MP3-capable car stereo in your car, or if you are planning to get one, then don't bother getting an ipod... just burn CD's full of MP3's and enjoy.
As far as the sound quality of MP3's... it's tought to generalize. You can certainly make MP3 files that sound as good as CD's. The software that you use to create MP3 files from your CD's should allow you to chose you personal sweet spot in the trade-off between file size and sound quality. If you plan to download MP3's, then you get what you get.
