This is such a tough subject. So many subjective view points...even with the lab tests there is no proof that compares Mobil 1 to other oils in the same driving enviroment.
Automotion....a very reputable SAAB shop in the NE and supplier of the SQR software and a racer say they would not put Mobil 1 in a lawn mower. Then Maptun, a highly respected tuner in Sweden said they have always used it..no issues, but, are considering and testing alternatives. I ran 5-30 before that...no issues. I ran 5-20 in my '82 900 APC...I literally beat the hell out of that car and it was over 360K last I heard, on the original engine with only one replacement turbo. It never burned a drop.
I called Mobil and talked to the head of customer service and high performance guy. He claims that NASCAR is using off the shelf 15-50 and 20 percent is un-sponsored. I have been running 0-40 Mobil 1 for quite a while now....in three 9K's with no issues. I like the idea of a low viscosity oil to get to the moving parts quicker at start up...particularly the turbo. I am considering going to a good Dino grade like Kendal perhaps..that is what SQR uses in their race cars.
Bottom line, I have not seen a conclusive lag tests...but, I have heard very convincing stories of blown engines under race condition loads. That bothers me as Mobil 1 is reported to be superior under high load and temps. Then again all of the exotics and HP cars run M 1. Go figure.
The great debate continues.
