Marek,
I'm not talking anybody out of a high mileage car by any means. My first car was an '88 9k turbo that finally succumbed to rust at 283k. I won't buy a car unless it has 120+k. Mileage doesn't scare me in the least.
You misinterpreted my statement; I was simply stating that there are many shops that prey on folks with high mileage cars. Unfortunately, our local Saab dealer is notoriously poor with service and has many rip-off complaints. A friend brought his '95 Aero back 5 times for an overboost / fuel cut off issue and never was able to fix it. I brought my wife's '04 Grand Cherokee to a local oil change station for its FIRST oil change; they told me the transmission fluid was dirty and needed a flush. I reminded them that the car had 2800 miles, and they shut up.
Unfortunately, there are MANY shops that will absolutely hose you with a good running 'new' car, let alone a 15 year old, 150k mile car. That's all I'm saying. If you have a high-mileage car, have a VERY reputable garage work on it or you could end up really broke.
That is exactly why I do my own wrenching.
