I'm at my wits end!!!!

I have been working on replacing my 94 Aero's clutch and have run into a brick wall. The whole project began as a slave cylinder replacement because I lost pedal control and could see leakage inside the bell housing. OK, so I ordered the parts and pulled everything apart (it seems like it would be easier to pull the engine and trans together; OK, not really) and have finally got to the put-it-back-together stage. New disk and pressure plate, slave cylinder and throw-out bearing. No problem with the clutch assembly itself (I even spent the extra $5US for the alignment tool, a real bargain) but I can't get the boot and t/o bearing back onto the slave cylinder.
I have wasted 2 days trying to compress the dust cover far enough to get it to let me lock on the bearing. I can never get the bearing back far enough to seat in place. I compared the old and new systems today and saw the old slave had the collar still extended and was easy to get the pieces on, so I tried to move the collar on the new slave. Ain't gonna happen unless I hook it up (out of the car), bleed the system, and pressurize it to make it move. Not too likely.
So, after that long rant, can anyone please suggest a way to get this $%#!%%^&^^%&& assembly together? I just can't compress the dust cover enough to seat the bearing and hold it all in place. Thanks for any suggestions. -Cal
