I was raised by two fathers, both pilots, both engineers. I am now a computer engineer, with a DBA wife.
I grew up with an appreciation of engineering fundamentals. My ideals of the "perfect car" stem directly in form following function. I think it reasonable to ask a passenger car to hold most any item (with the lid closed) and 4 people - in total comfort. Gas mileage should be more than 25 MPG. I believe performance is not just 0-60, but an elastic power curve; kicking in low and usable anytime a situation demands it -- even when hauling the items and passengers. To me, these ideals seem self evident.
I've owned 3 Saabs. Via fathers and brothers, I grew up around 6 more. From a Sonnet III to 99's, 900's, 9000's and Saab's vehicles seemed to always demand that appreciation…
I wish Saab was still able to meet this blend. My current love is a 1997 9000 Aero. I gave up my 1999 9-5 (bought new) to drive it. The 9000's power, handling, and build quality are miles beyond the current models. It's seats are amazing, and when I drop the rear, I can still fit a christmas tree in the back with a closed lid - and drive along with the best of today.
I can only reason that since only 2% of US auto market sales are classified "hatchback" and only 18% are "turbo 4's" - that 98% and 82% of the people [respectively] simply don’t understand engineering. Unfortunately, I have to reason that GM (Saab) misunderstood the market they had. It's a shame really, someday I (we) will have to all decide what else meets these needs.
1997 Saab Aero - simply the best car I've ever owned and a monument to engineering. Just like all of you - I'll keep this 9000 on the road until the bitterest of ends. They simply don’t make like this anymore...
