How soon should torn CV boot be replaced?

Bouys & Gulls,
I'm getting ready to drive 400-500 miles this weekend in my recently-acquired '88 9000T 5-spd, 140K miles. I've had this baby for about 3 months, it's had 2 owners and they have taken very good care of this brute. If it matters, it has the three-spoke Aero type wheels and low-profile tires; also upgraded (stiffer) springs and shocks all around. No strange noises, handles in an excellent manner.
Here's my concern - I just discovered a badly-torn CV boot on the driver's side (passenger side is good). All components inside boot appear to have lots of good, black grease covering everything.
My question is how dangerous is it to drive it 250 miles Saturday, and then 250 back home Sunday (this weekend)? And, if it's reasonably safe to make this trip w/ the torn boot, do I need to drive conservatively?
Thanks in advance.
Dennis
