Rain is passing through our area in Central California tonight, and I'd try to protect it from overspray even though you'd think centrifugal force would keep it out. It won't because other air currents and pieces in the way will allow some of the crud to be diverted toward your torn boot. And whenever you stop, some crud will drip down into the area, for no other reason than Murphy's Law. I suggest you wrap a bunch of plastic wrap around the broken boot and secure it on both ends with plastic wire ties. This should get you through if the CV joint isn't already clicking (when the wheel is fully locked (away from it?))
As mentioned by others, centrifugal force will try to keep some of the crud out, but it can and will find its way in no matter what. If the boot is badly damaged, you should have the joint cleaned and a new boot installed after your trip; it's not likely the joint will fail unless you've been hearing the click-click sound when turning just a little, or if you feel some binding when you turn.
I'd have the CV joint cleaned and repacked when you install the new boot just to get all the crud out. The joint bearings need to go back into the same journals they came from when you take it apart, so be careful to keep things organized if you DIY. Also, clean everything around the boot before you take things apart so no crud gets in when you remove or replace the assembly.
Good Luck! -Cal
