The Battery light coming on is a big indication. Yes, you have no other indications, but since you posted on Tuesday, and this is being written on Thursday, by now you've come up with the real symptom - if you're lucky, the car won't start. What's unlucky? The battery runs out of power as you're driving down the road and the engine just stops. Hopefully the truck behind you had good brakes.
At 12 volts the battery isn't being charged. Hence the Battery light. The most likely failure if the VR is fresh is a bad diode inside the alternator. They can be replaced, but it involves removing the alternator and opening it up. For that effort, just put a decent rebuild in.
