1. feel under the bell housing and check for brake fluid. No fluid there-you got lucky. If you have fluid there- then the slave is toast.
2. If it is dry there, then your master is toast.
If the slave is leaking, you will need to pull the tranny, and do a clutch job. Do it all: Disc, Plate, and Slave Cyl (Use ONLY a Saab unit- aftermarkets are crap), and release bearing. Check the condition of the flywheel and if it is not really smooth- have it resurfaced ($50.00).
Clutch Disc and Plate are about 200.00
Saab slave and release bearing about 170.00
Labor about 1000.00 from a good Indy (unless you are in Manhattan)
Clutch master is about 100.00, get the Lockheed/Ap; Scantech stuff is cheaper and not as reliable. If so inclined, you can replace it yourself in about 2 hours for the first time. A Saab indy will probably charge you about 100.00 - 150.00 to do it.
Not very likely, but you may have had a flex hose fail. Look around the clutch pedal and inside the engine compartment.
The odor of brake fluid in the cabin is a dead giveaway that the master has failed.
Good luck, and keep us informed,
K
