...I wouldn't gladly turn the rebuilding of one of these ZFs over to just anyone. A rebuilt unit (done by the acknowledged gurus, Erikssen (sp?)) runs about $1700 prior to installation, so if they're quoting you that amount for the whole job, including removal and installation, I'd be concerned that they're cutting some corners somewhere or other.
The older these cars get, the harder I find it in my mind to justify major repairs such as these, unless they're real gems like an Aero. After that, it's a matter of considering what you'll likely get for a crippled car (picture $500 or so) versus what a suitable replacement is going to cost you, and the attendant future repairs on that vehicle. It's a tough calculus but I'd personally tend to look for fresh meat if I thought I could find something 9000ish for about $3500 or less.
For that same $3500, you would expect to be able to replace the transmission with an Erikssen unit of course.
