The symptoms (flickering/idiot lights/stall) sound indicative of something in the charging system. Most likely the car stopped charging recently and it had been powering it's electrical system with the battery alone until it no longer had a strong enough charge to maintain itself. Could very well be voltage regulator like you suggested.
The voltage regulator is a removable piece on the alternator. I don't remember how accessible it is on a 1993 but it's not too expensive. You may want to jump-start the car and test alternator voltage while it is running if you feel ambitious enough.
