DI stands for "Direct Ignition". Rather than having a conventional (Hall effect) distributor, most 9000s have a red unit fitted between the camshafts, sitting down directly onto the four spark plugs, with individual coils for each plug.
As well as providing the spark for ignition, cars with the Trionic engine management system (1993 on) use information from the plugs to adjust various engine parameters, including boost levels on "full turbo" cars with a boost pressure control valve.
Cars with a DI need resistor plugs for this to work properly, and as the system was designed and set up for NGK plugs it's conventional wisdom here to insist on their use. The relevant numbers are BCPR7ES for turbo cars and BCPR6ES for the 4-cylinder non-turbo injection engine. People can and do experiment with other plugs, and spark plug technology is moving on, but going back to the original plug spec (or simply fitting new ones) can be the first step in resolving a range of problems.
Cars with a conventional distributor, such as my old 1990 2-litre normally-aspirated 9000s, Sven (RIP) might be called non-DI cars on this board.
