That's incorrect. If you have a Trionic 5 or 7, the ECU uses the plugs to monitor ionization in each cylinder. This means it's able to detect when detonation is about to occur without having to wait for it to actually happen as you do with normal knock sensors. But to do this properly it's calibrated to plugs with specific electrical properties, in this case the specified NGK plugs. You might not have had any issues, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't use other plugs. Lots of people have reported poor running with non-standard plugs or even premature DI failure.
