...isn't yours the silver/grey 9000 with the Aero seats and Carlsson bumpers? If it is, then you have one unbelieveably good looking 9000! I have a 9000 very similar to yours, a '92 9kt black/black with 17"s, lowering springs & Bilsteins, and Carlsson F&R bumpers, as well as performance enhancements. I am constantly fixing things on the car. I just did my second head gasket in 10,000 miles (requiring a $300 30k mile cylinder head to replace my second cracked head), new turbo, starter, alternator, windshield, ACC control unit, APC [boost] selenoid, both TCS specific selenoids, a/c condensor, radiator, radiator fan, 2 brake calipers...and thats not all. Not too long ago though, I had a noisey transmission and then the clutch went. To save money I pulled the trans myself and had a new clutch and slave installed on a newer trans and then I put it back in myself.
What I'm saying is...do some of the grunt-work yourself and pull the trans to see what the problem is or take it to your indie mechanic and have him check it out, but pulling it and putting it back in you can do on your own without THAT much difficulty. I'd hate to see your beautiful car parted out because of this. Hope I'm not being too forward sharing these opinions with you. After all the money I've spent on my car, I still love it and I'm glad everyday I get behind the wheel. Keep that car on the road, its too nice to die now.
Oh, and a rebuilt steering rack for your car is only $170 (w/ a refundable $75 core charge) through eeuroparts. Those aren't terribly difficult to remove from the car...never put one back in though, sorry.
