sorry for the dramatics, but sometimes a good post such as mine will get lost in the fray....

1. Is 5th like neutral?

---meaning if you put transmission in 5th it is like neutral, no noise, no grinding?

If so, it is most likely the gear that runs 5th, I forget the name of the gear, BUT about 4 years ago I had same problem on my 91, and I was able to fix it using a gear from another 9k transmission.

This fix, DID not require a tranny pull, I was able to do it from the griver side after pulling the driver side suspension components.

What basically happens, is there is a slight tolerance in the gear on the shaft, and wear over time caused some of the transmissions to have the gear kinda clean the teeth off on the inside surface of it....

The shaft is 100 times harder than the gear, so the shaft is fine, you need to remove covers and replace that gear....

again I forgot, BUT, I do know there is a gear involved in this that has spring loaded clips that fly out....I forgot if this is the gear, but it is located on the outside of the transmission.

I had 3 parts cars to choose from and vividly remember cutting suspension and motor mounts away to take the cover off the old parts cars....I also remember I ended up using a gear from a NT as all the turbo cars had worn but not bad gears. New gear was $100 at the time I believe...
