Yeah, mileage varies a lot it seems on these cars. I rarely get over 350 miles on a tank if I only drive around town (To-from work, errands. There's not a piece of flat ground around here, but there's not really anything in the way of stoplights, either... only a couple in the next town.) So, 350/17.5 = 20.0 mpg.
On the freeway, however, I've had over 500 miles on a few occasions. 528 was my all-time best, driving from Lake Tahoe (area, actually a bit north and west of the lake... Nevada City, CA) to Los Angeles, with about 35-miles of stop-light driving once there. So, 528/17.5 = 30.2 mpg.
I know I've put more than 17.5 gallons in it on the rare occasion that I push it, but these are ballpark numbers.
I know that the autos (from the the 90's) were less efficient than manuals, but Collin's mileage still seems a bit lower than average. Driving style can make a big difference.
There've been some good suggestions made.
Put each wheel up on a jack and make sure a caliper isn't dragging.
Bill, thanks for inviting the squeal! Collin, let us know if/what you find.
