"What Oil should I use?" has cost countless lives on this BB. I'll wade in.
Synthetic oil is better than dino oil. Of couse, lousy synthetic oil isn't a good as good dino oil.
My opinion - synthetic oil has advantages in resistance to oil breakdown. This allows greater oil change intervals before the oil loses viscosity, lubricity, etc. It is also nice in temperature extremes or in extreme useage (e.g. racing).
However, I use good quality dino oil in my cars, and I change it often. I don't race my cars, and I don't live in an area of temperature extremes. So I usually don't see oil breakdown due to stress. I like changing oil because it flushes out chemicals and particles that the filter doesn't catch. So I wouldn't get the advantage of the longer change intervals synthetic provides. This is my personal approach - you do what you want to do. Synthetic oil is better than dino oil; however, make sure you actually get advantage of those better capabilities, or you're just wasting money.
