Replacement Of Shift Coupler

Hi fellow Saabers. I have a 96 CS and I am trying to replace the shift coupler. Despite visiting the many postings I am having a hell of a time time in getting out the tapered pin. I can't seem to find enough room to swing a hammer either from above or below. I thought that I could fix the sloppiness of the shifter by tightening the 8 mm nut, but I broke off the end of the pin instead, so I now have to use a punch.
If anyone has another method please share it with me, frustration is really beginning to set in.
HELP !!!!
Saaberite.
