Thanks for both posts Dick T... I scanned the board for "limiter mod" and found a few posts. Early this morning - I did my best 5-minute wedge-it-with-a stick repair action.. it seemed to help some.
I am more & more suspecting it's the tranny. Sitting at a stoplight, I grabbed second gear and slowly let the clutch out - pops out of gear (not hard, mind you, the stickshift just 'floats' forward a bit). This does not happen in 4th.
Also - I found that the previous owner was (is) running Redline 75W90 synthetic... This w/e I'll take my super hi-tech vacuum suction thingy (that's a technical term!) and replace it with the recommended 10/30 oil.
It's probably too late improve anything - but given I bought the car for $500 as a non-running "parts car" initially I am not out any real dough if it stops running (I have my '92 Griffin as a primary backup). I'd hate to just give up on a perfectly good 9000 tho - and may weigh spending the $1600 or so for the wizards at Scanwest Auto to do a rebuild...
