But, after it wouldn't move with pressure (12" +/- ratchet handle, then +/- 2' bar), then it still wouldn't move with the small impact gun, we just closed our eyes and tried.
After all, the extractors had 3-4" shafts on them, so it wasn't as easy as wrenching on a true socket, which allows the torque to be applied much closer to the item being "turned". With an offset like that, even the 2' handle was difficult to keep from moving about. If a larger breaker bar didn't shear the drain plug, it would have sheared the extractor shaft.
I forgot to mention that after the #5 broke, #4 was placed firmly over more of the material, and it proceeded to slip, removing more of the drain plug.
I would have loved to have forgone the impact gun, but at a certain point, you just throw the kitchen sink at the problem. As soon as we decided to grind away to the copper, the possibility that the car would not be driveable became real.
An aside, I'm sure I could have found some socket-type extractors had I looked other places, but I didn't really think, at the time, that they would fail, and had high expectations that they would be successful.
Hind-site is always perfect. I'm just glad I changed my oil, and have a new drain plug in there.
