It would make it easier for me. I was the one who did the last oil change though, and I tightened the drain plug with an 8" socket wrench to what I would call "snug". I did it while lying on my back, on 3rd avenue in Bozeman, MT. I didn't hang on it or anything... just hand-tight... and I'm a slight dude, not too strong. Not exactly what I'd consider over-tightening, but I could be wrong.
I wonder if temperature or some other factor played a role? Did the drain plug cool off or heat up differently than the oil sump, causing some later change in tension in the plug? I don't know. Perhaps I set the plug in the sun, while the underside of my car stayed cool, and when the plug cooled, it contracted, increasing the pressure on the copper ring? Hmmm...
I do think that over-torquing is common. A 10-minute oil change place stripped my aluminum sump on my first car. Lesson learned... that was a long time ago.
