Sticky caliper Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: 92 9000 Brake Issue?, Ted Kitch, Tue, 11 Sep 2007 19:13:32 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Been there, done that.
The front caliper is sticking. It doesn't retract easily. Remember, when you take your foot off the pedal, the piston doesn't retract. Instead, it just doesn't have pressure on it. It can be pushed back, just like you can push back the piston with a clamp when you want to put in new brake pads. Small imperfections in the rotor push the pads back.
But if the piston is sticking, say because of corrosion in the piston, or dirt and grit that has gotten past the dust seal, the pads will rub. That produces lots of heat, and that causes the rotor to warp. The warped rotor grabs the pads on the high spots as the wheel goes around, causing the vibration. And that heat can cause the piston to hang up even more.
Your best bet is to either replace the offending caliper with a new or rebuilt unit, or rebuild the caliper yourself. My local autoparts store will sell a rebuilt caliper for about $80 after the core charge, so I just go that way, as I can't be sure what I'll see when I open the caliper up to rebuild it.
