I have seen a PVC fitting cut with notches to turn this out but was able to use a large pliers on mine to span the diameter and then put large screwdriver across handle and threaded it out. Hope this makes visual sense! BTW I replaced whole thing instead of just pump motor and spliced flexible line to return valve and rebuilt return valve using parts from original (broke on me and gutted it) with pressure valve purchased at dealer.
