In an attempt to keep this thread realatively simple I over simplified the interaction of the ECU and the BPC. The ECU not only protects the engine for less than adequate octane it also looks at several other perameters and cuts the boost when appropriate. Knock is the killer and preventing it is what the ECU does. Manually, ie lifting off the gas if you hear knock, you will never react as fast as the ECU and the BPC. A little knock will not kill the engine but it is hard on it. Lots of knock or a little knock over a long time period will dystroy pistons and more. This website has several recorded cases of just that. Gettting the same feel with an MBC as you do with a tuned ECU is not going to happen because the action of the BPC and ECU is pretty much seamless to the driver. When you use an MBC your right foot is all that controls and the MBC response is much quicker in the lower gears where the ECU would normally be providing some proctection. If you are fixed on getting an MBC then I would set it for no more than 10-12 lbs guage. Not quite as much punch all the time but realatively save for the engine.
