hi Eric, this sounds like the classic clutch master cylinder going away. the seal in the cylinder is letting fluid past and that is why you are going to the floor. but you can pump it up like bicycle pump and then it firms up and seems to work. if you are not loosing fluid (which could point to the MC or slave cylinder - you have to go on a where is the fluid leaking to determine which at that point) then a test for the master cylinder is to sit in your driveway with parking brake ON, in second gear with the clutch to the floor, and the engine idling. give it a good 10 minutes. if the clutch starts to engage even though your foot is to the floor, the MC is leaking. If it passes the 10 minute test, try it again when the outside temp is either colder or warmer than the first test. sometimes the outside temp does things to the seals.
Let us know how it goes.
