there should be no issues once the sub-frame comes down unless they screw something up, i'd say; subframe comes out easily just a bunch of nuts and bolts... it takes 4 - 6 hours to R&R the transmission which is required to replace the rear main seal. replacing the rear main seal is easy, you just pull the old one out and put the new one in. if you have a standard trans, i'd replace the clutch slave cylinder and t/o bearing while you are in there with OEM parts, since it should only add about 10 minutes of labor time, unless you've had it done recently, which I'm assuming you haven't... that'll add $200 to the job, roughly. so, figure labor on 6 hours plus $200 for parts.

Even at $80/hr you're looking at $500 for labor tops plus a main seal, so $850 sounds way too high. I mean, if you know what you're doing and have the tools, 6 hours in the driveway at home is reasonable. What always lost me time (3 R&Rs plus one removal when i scrapped car) was getting at the starter bolts until i finally just took off the intake manifold, which adds about 15 minutes R&R if you don't drop a bolt somewhere. A mechanic should have all the proper sockets, extensions, etc., to make the job easy, and if they've done it before, it's a snap.

If it's an automatic, it's a bit trickier cause of the flywheel being bolted to the torque converter, so add an hour just for good measure cause you want that whole scenario done right so nothing gets misaligned and broken; but if it's a standard, you're at least $300 high I'd say, the main seal is a $12 part.

Other question is how badly do you think the rear main seal is leaking? How often to you have to add oil? I knew one saab mechanic whose 9000 had a bad rear main seal leak and he just kept adding oil, it wasn't worth the time to him to replace it since it wasn't going to make his car run any better, he just kept an eye on the oil level and figured his 15 year old high mileage turbo wasn't worth the trouble of replacing it.

if the leak isn't bad, you might consider waiting until you need a clutch or slave cylinder replacement... just things to consider. ask around here, i don't know if rear main seals can suddenly fail massively and destroy an engine without warning.
