i had 210K on my manual in my 90 9000 when i parted with it (rusted brake lines and slave cylinder) and that tranny was fine. the manual tranny in my 92 9000 locked up in first gear and wouldn't come out at 173K after making horrible grinding noises... purchased it at 130K connecticut highway miles, and we did another 30K highway miles and the rest in town miami driving, stop and go, stop and go, stop and go...

have an auto in our 93 9000, purchased with 147K miles off ebay, was supposedly a rebuilt tranny but owner didn't provide receipt and when i got the car i noticed the fluid was like black water, which i replaced, and that firmed up the shifts a lot... by 164K I had changed the fluid several times, it always shifted best with new fluid and would only slip a little bit shifting from reverse to drive after backing out of a parking space...

i got a good deal $1100 on a brand new auto tranny from this place in canada and put that in cause i didn't want to miss the opportunity just to see how long the original would last. i love the way the saab auto tranny performs but if i wasn't in traffic all the time, i'd wait for the manual tranny, better gas mileage and more control.

it really comes down to how hard the car has been driven, how often tranny fluid has been changed (better than every 30K is ideal), and whether it ran hot or overheated (which would damage tranny fluid and possibly tranny if tranny fluid didn't stay cool enough)...

i would test drive any auto car, get records, check fluid to see that it's pink now (not black like mine). and same goes for the manual, those can also fail, fluid changes aren't so important, but check the fluid and see that it's there, and see that it shifts smoothly.

you gotta remember, auto trannys can fail in these cars under warranty sometimes, just like DI cassettes, etc., some of it is just luck.
