Try throwing some jumper clips on the TPS (not sure which pins, I believe there are only three or four so finding the common shouldn't be challenging), and just slowly see if it goes through the range smoothly with an impedance-reading multimeter. If there are obvious flat/dead spots then it definitely is causing issues; if you don't notice any immediately you'll want to get more precise and find a published impedance range of the TPS. Make sure to rapidly and slowly let the TPS fall to idle and see if there are any erratic readings; it may be mostly functional lending to a false sense of security though in reality occasionally be going out of range at the idle land point resulting in an intermittent symptom.
This is a common failure that has a wide array of symptoms on older Bosch cars from the 80s in particular, and many of the 944/951 people I hang around actually keep an extra TPS in the car's tool kit on long road trips.
A quick fix is to carefully open the TPS and spray in "Tuner and Control Cleaner and Lubricant," which is available for like 7 bucks at radioshack. It's a great purchase; one can goes a long way and I've saved dozens of difficult to replace and/or expensive potentiometers with it. It's highly toxic too, so you know it's gotta work well. And whats the worst that can happen, the TPS breaks and you have to buy a new one anyway.
