I purchased my 224k mile 1994 Aero with an inoperable speedometer, after the seller said his dealer diagnosed the issue as the nylon gear on the VSS. I pulled the VSS to inspect the gear (dark plastic, not white like I've seen before), and found it to be in great shape.

Step 2 was to insert the gear itself back into the hole and see if I could get it to engage on the gear in the tranny. It would not. I can get the teeth to mesh by leaning the gear toward the front of the car, but without doing that, I can rotate it freely around in the hole. I have a core 1994 tranny in my garage, and when I insert the nylon gear into the hole on that tranny, it definitely meshes, and will turn when I physically put it in gear and rotate the input shaft. This tells me that the inside gear is gone.

I have not tried to use a drill to test the VSS as I pulled the battery to gain easier access to the VSS area.

I know the gear is inside the transmission, but what will I be looking at for a project to replace this gear? Has anybody done a writeup, or have a link to a procedure? Seems a tranny manual will be in my near future.....**sigh**
