1995 Saab 9000 CSE, 150K miles
Car had both a lack of boost and rough idle (mostly, idle would drop very low), but the car ran pretty well. After reading the boards, I decided to replace the vacuum hoses, hoping this would fix both problems. When I was replacing the last of them, the one that goes under the TB, I couldn't figure out where it when. To get a better view, I removed the turbo hose and I found the AIC hose going into the front of the TB had pulled out of the TB. Got back on the board and figure out how to fix it. After the repair, the rough idle was much worst, but I had my boost back. Back to the board and I tried a number of fixes (cleaning the AIC, TB, disconnect battery). The biggest problem was that the idle problem would come and go, sometimes working great, and other times surging. The car seem to idle ok when I first started it up, but it wouldn't last. Some of these fixes make minor improvement, but I still had the rough idle. Finally, I tried pinching the vacuum lines to see if I could identify a leak and found the one going to the PVC connection seem to make a difference. I got a short piece of vacuum hose and block off one end, and pulled the PVC vacuum hose off at the intake and put this short hose on. This fixed about 90% of the idle problems. After checking the vacuum line going to the PVC connection, I found the value cover nipple bushing to be loose (and oily). Off to the dealer to get a replacement. On the trip home, I pulled out the old one and put in the new one. Found the old one very loose and the rubber on the inside was coming apart. This fixed the rough idle, but now the car wants to idle at 1200 instead of 850 (it seem to idle at 950 with the temp fix). Drove home like this, making many stops on the way. The idle seem to improve over time, but it never got right. The next day, the high idle seem to be back, but my rough idle was gone. The ECU seems to learn, but not fast enough for me, so I pulled the battery power and reset the ECU. Next day, the fast idle is now gone, and while the idle is not perfect, it much better and it seems to get better as the ECU learns.
Lots of work to find that I only need to replace a $3 part (after I fixed the AIC problem). So if you have an idle problem, check to see if the PCV bushing is loose, replace it first, and if this doesn't fix the problem, then the vacuum lines. I also check my boost gauge and found that I'm getting vacuum at the boost gauge, so my problem was caused by a vacuum leak that changed over time.
One of the things I noticed near the end was that the car seem to run better when it was cold out (or first thing in the morning). I later figured out that the PVC bushing stop leaking when it was cold enough, and would start leaking when it got hot.
