i'll mark parts a little bit, usually just round up to the nearest $5. mostly i work on friend's cars, not to make a killing, but to cover my time enough so i don't resent doing the work. shops usually charge 'list' price, which is full retail when sell price is 30-40% off, or roughly double the parts place's cost.

some people get offended by shops marking parts up, but they have to make money to stay in business. having been a mechanic, i know that good honest shops don't have solid gold toilets like other places, or body shops that do a lot of insurance jobs.

doubling or tripling is highway robbery. worse than the dealer even!
