Anyone disassemble a door lock?

I've never been able to lock/unlock my doors by using the key. If I had to lock the car up, I'd open the left rear door, reach in and push the lock down and everything would lock up. Then upon returning, I'd unlock the right front door and reach over and unlock the drivers door, then walk around car to get in. Sounds like a hassle huh.
So I took off the door panel and outside door handle and found the culprit. On the door lock cylinder is a ring with a post sticking out that attaches to a rod that goes down to the lock accuator. The little ball was broke off on the ring. Re-installed everything, ordered part, now I have removed everything again to install the part and I'm stuck with disassembling the door lock cylinder.
On the end of the cylinder is a ring with a 90 degree thing on it. The next ring in line is the one I need to replace with the ball on it. I just want to pry off the end ring but I know the whole thing will explode into twenty pieces and I'll never get it back together.
Anyone have any experience taking the lock cylinder apart?
Thanks,
Captain
