And the answer is really somewhat obscured by the fact that Amsoil is sold through home marketing. I'm not sure if it is an AmWay style distribution system, of if just small marketers. The second issue as I recall was lots of good testimony from users who often also sold the product, but no real testing data to back it up.
So, my impression was that yes, Amsoil may be a great oil, but no one had run the tests to compare it to M1, Royal Purple, or any of the other oils out there. It is also one of the more expensive oils, so there is no price advantage.
Don't know if Amsoil has since gotten substantive testing done by an independant tester, and published the results. Or if anyone else has done that work. Perhaps someone will give the link for the "oil guy" who is often quoted on this board.
I don't think you will go wrong with Mobil 1. There are likely other oils just as good. I knew a chemist who worked for an auto company who swore that all of the synthetics were much better than the dino oils, and it did not make a lot of difference which brand you picked. This was in the early days of syn, and I've seen a lot of info since about additives which do make a difference.
So, now I expect you'll hear a lot about the best oil and why, and that is good.
