You really don't want to. Dropping the subframe isn't as scary as it sounds. It's not like you undo the bolts and the engine falls out. Following Quasi's instructions, you unbolt a few bolts, and you have to pry the front of the subframe down. I stick a chunk of 2x4 in there to keep it spaced open. This gives you enough room to remove the motor mount. If you don't do this, the clearances are really, really tight. It's worth spending the extra 10 minutes undoing a few bolts.
With the rear lower mount, you can actually unbolt the bracket that goes from the mount to the engine. Three bolts, as I remember. You need to get pretty well under the car.
But really, dropping the subframe is quick and easy, and not scary.
