Engine age vs e performance questions get me upset

I have seen several posts and even got a snide comment from a coworker with a new 2006 BMW M3 at work about Engine Age. ("Not bad for an 13 year old car, son) and I want to dispel a myth about engine age or at least be corrected about my misunderstanding. I realize that none of this is totally analytical. Rings, and bearings wear and injectors and throttle bodies get dirty and valves wear and the chain stretches but a well maintained 167 K engine shouldn't have lost one step. After all performance is still a function of engine displacement and air volume/flow and fuel pressure, and compression. Plus I have a rebuilt Mitsubishi Turbo TD04 thats 1000 miles old.
The reason this question angers me is those of us who cant afford new cars have to take cars at their second stage of ownership--100K miles plus and live with them---will never drive new cars. I once had a Volvo 940 Turbo 940 with 212K and those B234 engines were tough. I wish someone could actually plot a graph of engine age vice performance.
Please dont say its so.
